Tema Circuit Court Sentences Two Police Officers to 13 Years for Narcotics Trafficking

The Tema Circuit Court has sentenced two police officers to a combined 13 years in prison for unlawful possession and trafficking of narcotics. The ruling, delivered by Her Lordship Aleanor Kakra Barnes Botchway, comes after almost four years of legal proceedings.

The convicts — ASP Nasiru Amadu, 48, the second-in-command at the Sakumono District Police Command, and Cpl. Emmanuel Mintah, 43, a service driver — were found guilty of conspiring to transport large quantities of Indian hemp.

The case dates back to November 2023 when intelligence officers at a snap checkpoint intercepted a Nissan Navara pickup (GP 727) suspected to be transporting drugs from Ho to Accra.

The vehicle, driven by the two officers, was searched, leading to the discovery of eight sacks containing 541 compressed parcels believed to be Indian hemp. Investigations later revealed that Mintah had agreed to transport the substances from Peki Tsibu to Tulaku, allegedly sourced through a relative known as “Oluman.”

He then involved his superior, ASP Amadu, and the two allegedly traveled to a forest near Peki Tsibu to collect the consignment before being arrested on their return journey. It also emerged that this was not their first such operation.

Both officers were convicted of unlawful possession and trafficking of narcotic drugs. They each received sentences of 10 years and 5 years, to run concurrently, and were additionally fined GH₵120,000. In default of the fine, they will serve an extra three years in prison.
