8-Year-Old Boy Drowns in Abandoned Manhole at Buduburam
An 8-year-old boy has died after falling into an abandoned manhole, while his 15-year-old cousin remains in critical condition.

An eight-year-old boy has died after drowning in an empty manhole at Blue Rose Estate in Buduburam. This area is in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region. The tragic incident has left residents in shock and renewed concerns about safety hazards within the community.

The deceased, identified as Elijah Success Kaba, reportedly fell into the manhole together with his 15-year-old cousin, Andrew Jallo, while the two were attempting to draw water from it. Andrew survived but is currently in critical condition.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service responded promptly to the emergency after receiving a distress call.

According to Buduburam Fire Station Officer, DO II Samuel Derry Moro, firefighters arrived within 10 minutes and managed to rescue Andrew. However, Elijah sadly passed away while receiving treatment at St. Gregory Catholic Hospital.

Speaking to Citi News, Officer Moro said:
“We received a call while at the station about two children who had fallen. Within 10 minutes, we were on the scene. We rescued the 15-year-old, but despite our best efforts, we could not save the eight-year-old. We involved town elders to assist with the proper rites before continuing our rescue efforts.”

Residents are blaming the estate developers, Blue Rose Limited, for failing to secure the abandoned manhole and are calling for immediate action to prevent future accidents. One resident appealed:

“We are appealing for this manhole to be relocated to higher ground where water problems won’t occur. At the very least, it should be filled for now to prevent further accidents and save the lives of children in the community.”
