Minority Calls for Suspension of Ghana Armed Forces Recruitment After El-Wak Stampede
Minority in Parliament urges suspension of Ghana Armed Forces recruitment after the El-Wak Stadium stampede, calling for safety reforms and compensation for victims.
The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to immediately suspend the ongoing nationwide military recruitment exercise to allow for thorough reforms that will enhance public safety and ensure transparency in the process.
Their call comes in the wake of Wednesday’s tragic incident at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, where six applicants lost their lives and several others were injured after thousands of hopeful recruits gathered for the exercise.
Members of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament on Thursday paid a visit to the injured individuals receiving medical care at the 37 Military Hospital.
During the visit, the Committee’s Ranking Member, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, stressed the importance of halting all recruitment activities across the country to allow for investigations and necessary reforms.
“In the interest of protecting the lives of potential recruits, we are calling for an immediate nationwide suspension of the exercise. This pause will provide room to properly investigate, review, and introduce reforms before the process resumes,” Reverend Fordjour said.
He also appealed to the government to offer financial and emotional support to the victims and their families.
“We further urge the government to ensure that fair compensation is given to the young men and women who tragically lost their lives and to their relatives. For those injured, we hope that once they recover and meet the Ghana Armed Forces’ medical standards, they are given priority. Their family members should also be considered for replacement opportunities where possible,” he added.
