Obuasi SHTS Crisis: Six Arrested for Assaulting Headmaster Over Alleged Campus Baby Burial

Obuasi SHTS headteacher is hospitalized after students allegedly attacked him over claims of a buried infant on campus. Police have arrested six suspects.

Security has been significantly reinforced at Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS) in the Ashanti Region after a violent disturbance that left the school's headteacher hospitalized and caused extensive damage to campus property.

Six individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence as police launch a dual investigation into the incident and the central accusation that sparked it.

The unrest reportedly began between 12:30 a.m. and 1:30 a.m., when a student claimed to have spotted the headteacher, Abdullai Zakari's, vehicle near the school's refuse disposal area. The student alerted others, who gathered at the scene and allegedly discovered the body of an infant, believed to be around five to six months old.

The students subsequently confronted Mr. Zakari over the unconfirmed allegation, and the situation quickly escalated into violence. Mr. Zakari was severely assaulted and sustained multiple injuries. He is currently receiving medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

Vandalism, Internal Clashes, and Police Intervention

Despite police responding to the scene, sections of the student body vandalized school facilities, including parts of the headteacher's official residence. Reports also indicate that senior students attacked several first-year students after accusing them of taking the headteacher's side.

Police officers secured the area, exhumed the infant's body, and transferred it to the morgue for forensic examination. Law enforcement intervention prevented further escalation and widespread destruction of state property.

Authorities emphasize that the allegation connecting the headteacher to the buried infant remains entirely unconfirmed by police investigators.

Official Response and Security Measures

Following the rampage, the Head of the Obuasi Municipal Security Council, Faustilove Appiah Kannin, along with senior police officers, visited the school grounds to engage students and appeal for calm.

Obuasi Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Mahama Iddrisu, assured the school community that maximum security measures have been deployed to maintain order and protect lives and property.

Police investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding both the discovery of the infant's body and the subsequent violent attack on the headteacher.
