SLTF Increases Student Loan by 50% Under Mahama’s Reset Agenda
The Students Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) has announced a 50% increase in student loan amounts available to tertiary students in Ghana, in line with President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset Agenda. The new reforms, unveiled on November 7, 2025, are part of the government’s broader effort to make higher education more affordable and accessible.
In a statement signed by Dr. Saajida Shiraz, Chief Executive Officer of the SLTF, the Fund explained that the increment reflects current economic realities and seeks to ensure that no student is denied tertiary education due to financial hardship. Under the new structure, loan disbursements for regular students now range from GHC2,250 to GHC4,500 per academic year, paid directly to beneficiaries.
As part of the reforms, the SLTF has introduced a new Students Loan Plus package, which provides full fee coverage loans disbursed directly to tertiary institutions. Additionally, loan interest rates have been reduced from 12% compound interest to 6% simple interest during the study and moratorium period.
The Fund has also removed the E-zwich requirement for applications, with GCB Bank accounts now automatically created through the No Fees Stress portal, ensuring faster and more convenient disbursement of funds to students.
According to Dr. Shiraz, these interventions underscore the government’s commitment to building an inclusive and equitable tertiary education system. The SLTF, operating under the Ministry of Education, remains dedicated to supporting students through innovative financial solutions that enhance access to higher education.
The reforms form part of President Mahama’s flagship No Fees Stress Initiative, a key component of his Reset Agenda, aimed at reducing financial barriers, promoting equal opportunity, and strengthening Ghana’s human capital development.
