Mahama Announces Policy for SHS Poultry and Livestock Farms

President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a new government policy that will require all Senior High Schools across Ghana to establish their own poultry and livestock farms. The initiative, according to the President, is designed to help schools become more self-sufficient by producing their own meat instead of relying solely on market purchases.

Speaking at the 65th anniversary celebration of Ghana Senior High School (Ghanasco)—where both he and the First Lady are alumni—President Mahama emphasized the importance of the initiative. He announced that Ghanasco will be among the first beneficiaries of the policy. “We are coming up with a policy where secondary schools will have a poultry farm and a livestock farm, so Ghanasco will be one of the schools selected,” he said.

The President explained that the farms will ensure a reliable supply of meat for school meals, reducing costs and improving quality. “We will establish a poultry farm here and a livestock farm so that you don’t have to go to the market to buy your meat. You take your meat from your own farm. And again, the headmaster will have no excuse when you go to the dining hall and there’s no meat in your food,” he added.

Beyond food security, the policy also aims to enhance practical agricultural training for students. By engaging students in hands-on farming activities, schools will contribute to the government’s broader strategy to boost food production while equipping learners with valuable skills in agriculture and livestock management.
