Mahama Orders Schools to Buy Only Ghana-Made Food Products

President John Mahama has instructed all basic and secondary schools across the country to source their rice, maize, chicken, and eggs exclusively from local producers.

According to the government, this directive is meant to strengthen domestic agriculture and cut down the nation’s dependence on imported food items.

The announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the presentation of the 2026 Budget to Parliament on November 13.
He stated:

“Mr. Speaker, President Mahama has directed that every school—from basic to senior high—buy only Ghana-grown rice, maize, chicken, and eggs. The Ministry of Education, GETFund, the School Feeding Programme, the Free SHS Secretariat, and the National Food Buffer Stock Company must ensure full enforcement of this order.”

Government believes this policy will help channel school feeding funds back into the local economy while expanding opportunities for Ghanaian farmers and agribusinesses.
