Kwakye Ofosu Assures Substantive Defence Minister Appointment Soon
The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has given us reassurance. He stated that President John Dramani Mahama understands his responsibilities. He will appoint a new Minister for Defence soon.
Since the August 6 helicopter crash that claimed the life of Dr Edward Omane Boamah, the Ministry of Defence has been under the temporary leadership of Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, who currently serves as acting Defence Minister.
The prolonged vacancy has sparked calls from various quarters, including former Defence Minister and Bimbilla MP Dominic Nitiwul, for a substantive appointment to address emerging security challenges facing the country.
Nitiwul expressed concern over the delay, noting that the growing threats of terrorism and insecurity across the West African sub-region require strong and focused leadership at Ghana’s Defence Ministry. He urged President Mahama to act swiftly—either by elevating the current deputy minister or nominating a new appointee—to ensure continuity and stability in the nation’s defence administration.
Kwakye Ofosu spoke on Channel One TV on Monday, October 27. He dismissed claims that appointing a successor is hard. He confirmed the administration's promise to fill the leadership gap. He wants the Defence Ministry to work well and match national security goals.
He stated, “President Mahama fully understands his responsibilities. Whereas he had a close relationship with the late Minister Omane Boamah, the President is pragmatic and professional enough to understand that life must go on.”
Kwakye Ofosu added that, “Whatever needs to be done will be done to ensure that the Defence Ministry has the best leadership, and that the policies implemented contribute to national development and safeguard our collective security. In due course, that announcement will be made.”
