Kotoka International Airport to Be Renamed Accra International Airport – Mahama Ayariga
Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has announced that the government is set to rename Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as Accra International Airport, pending parliamentary approval.
According to him, the Minister for Transport will soon present a bill to Parliament to provide the legal backing required to effect the change.
The announcement signals a significant shift in the identity of Ghana’s main international aviation hub, which has borne the name of Lieutenant General Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka since 1969.
Mr Ayariga’s disclosure has reignited public debate over the naming of national monuments, with sections of the public and civil society groups previously questioning the appropriateness of naming the airport after a key figure associated with Ghana’s first military coup in 1966.
Before it was renamed Kotoka International Airport, the facility was originally known as Accra International Airport, a name some observers argue is more neutral and reflective of national unity.
If Parliament approves the bill, all official records, signage, aviation documents and international references will be updated to reflect the new name, Accra International Airport.
The Transport Ministry is yet to announce a specific timeline for the presentation of the bill, but discussions around the proposed change are expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
