Immigration Officer Arrested Over Alleged Transport of 2,600 AK-47 Ammunition
The Upper East Regional Police Command has arrested an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service, Assistant Immigration Control Officer I (AICO I) Ahmed Abdul Samad, in connection with the alleged transportation of 2,600 rounds of live AK-47 ammunition intercepted in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, who is a native of Nalerigu and currently stationed at the Paga Sector Command, was picked up after the ammunition was discovered during a police stop-and-search operation.
According to police sources, AICO I Abdul Samad denied knowledge of the ammunition during interrogation but confirmed that he was transferred in June 2025 from the Tema Regional Immigration Headquarters, where he served as a dispatch rider.
He explained that he had left behind some personal belongings, including a body armour plate and black long boots, and later asked a colleague at the Immigration Service headquarters in Accra to send the items to him on December 26, 2025.
The package, transported on an OA Bus with registration number GT 5771–18, was intercepted at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier, where officers uncovered the ammunition along with bulletproof plates, a damaged helmet and boots concealed beneath the driver’s seat.
Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident and identify all persons involved.
