GTEC Orders University of Ghana to Reverse 2025/2026 Fee Increases

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed the University of Ghana (UG) to immediately reverse the academic fee increases announced for the 2025/2026 academic year.

According to the regulator, the university implemented the hikes without obtaining the necessary statutory approvals, a move that contravenes established procedures governing fee adjustments in public tertiary institutions.

GTEC has therefore directed UG to roll back the increases with immediate effect and maintain the existing fee structure until all legal requirements are fully met.

The directive follows public backlash and concerns raised by students over reported fee increases exceeding 25 percent across several programmes. GTEC has emphasized that no public university is permitted to introduce new fees or adjust existing ones without prior approval from the commission and Parliament.

The University of Ghana has been given a deadline to demonstrate compliance, failing which it could face regulatory sanctions. The development reinforces GTEC’s stance on protecting students and ensuring transparency and accountability in fee-setting across Ghana’s tertiary education sector.
