Government to Upgrade Category B Schools to Category A by 2026 — Education Minister
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that the government is working on a comprehensive plan to upgrade some Category B senior high schools to Category A status. The initiative forms part of efforts to address Ghana’s long-standing school placement challenges and ensure equitable access to quality education for all students.
Speaking at the launch of the ADEA Triennale on Education Conference, Mr. Iddrisu explained that the Ministry of Education would require significant budgetary support to execute the plan. He highlighted that while there are 76,000 vacancies available, over 393,000 qualified students compete for those spaces, making placements highly competitive and often unfair.
According to him, discussions with the President are already underway to begin implementation of the plan in 2026. The project will see at least ten Category C schools upgraded to Category B, and another ten Category B schools elevated to Category A. The upgrades will include new classroom blocks, dormitories, and improved teaching and learning resources.
The announcement comes shortly after the Minister received a petition from the Coalition of Unpaid Teachers, who are demanding the payment of 13 months’ salary arrears. Mr. Iddrisu assured them that his ministry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, will present a joint memorandum to Cabinet to resolve the issue.
