Ghana Opens Doors to West African Deportees from U.S.

Ghana has opened its doors to West African nationals deported from the United States, in a move President John Mahama says is guided by ECOWAS principles of free movement. So far, 14 people — including Nigerians and Gambians — have been facilitated into Ghana under the agreement.

The decision has sparked mixed feelings. Some Ghanaians worry that taking in deportees could add pressure on already stretched resources, while others believe Ghana is simply fulfilling its duty as a regional leader. Mahama insists the policy will be managed responsibly, stressing that West Africans don’t require visas to enter Ghana.
