Ghana AIDS Commission to Introduce HIV Preventive Vaccine in 2026

The Ghana AIDS Commission has announced plans to introduce an HIV preventive vaccine in 2026, marking a major milestone in the fight against the virus. The move comes as Ghana continues to grapple with rising infections, with more than 15,000 new cases recorded in 2023, according to the latest national HIV/AIDS data.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, September 30, Director-General of the Commission, Dr. Prosper Akanbong, described the vaccine rollout as a groundbreaking step in prevention efforts. He explained that while the initial doses will be secured from external sources, preparations are underway to build local capacity for production.

Dr. Akanbong disclosed that the Commission has already engaged with pharmaceutical companies, supported by the German development agency GIZ, to establish a sustainable supply chain. “Together with GIZ, we are on track, and in the latter part of 2026 or the early part of 2027, we should be able to produce vaccines for Ghana,” he said.

Beyond strengthening HIV prevention, the initiative is also expected to boost the country’s pharmaceutical sector by equipping local organizations to produce vaccines. This dual benefit positions Ghana not only to tackle HIV more effectively but also to enhance self-reliance in health innovation and vaccine production.
