Ghana Grants Citizenship to Over 150 African Diaspora Members in Accra

Ghana has taken a historic step in welcoming the African diaspora by granting citizenship to more than 150 individuals during an emotional ceremony in Accra on March 9, 2026. Held at the Accra International Conference Centre, the event saw new citizens from primarily African American and Caribbean backgrounds take the Oath of Allegiance and receive their certificates, symbolizing a profound reconnection with the continent.

This milestone builds on Ghana's "Beyond the Return" initiative and reflects the government's commitment to healing historical wounds from the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, described the occasion as far more than a legal formality—it represents restoration, shared identity, and unity among branches of the same ancestral tree.

She highlighted iconic sites like Cape Coast and Elmina Castles as reminders of the painful past, while praising the resilience and contributions of diaspora descendants. Ghana continues advocating at the United Nations to recognize the slave trade as a crime against humanity, underscoring the nation's leadership in pan-African reconciliation.

The ceremony reinforces Ghana's long-standing ties to the diaspora, rooted in Kwame Nkrumah's vision since independence in 1957. Beyond remittances and investments, the government aims to foster deeper partnerships in entrepreneurship, culture, education, tourism, and national development.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang urged the new citizens to embrace their Ghanaian nationality with pride and active participation, contributing to a future of dignity and shared prosperity. This event marks Ghana's ongoing embrace of its global family as the "17th Region."
