Couple Arrested for Beheading 3-Day-Old Baby in Central Region
In a shocking incident that has gripped the Central Region of Ghana, a young couple has been arrested in Awutu Bontrase, within the Awutu Senya West District, over the alleged beheading of their newborn baby.
The suspects, 24-year-old Abena Benewa and 26-year-old Bright Ashiao, are accused of mutilating the three-day-old infant severing the head and left hand before reportedly discarding the body at a local refuse dump. Community members discovered the grim remains, sparking immediate outrage and a search that led to the couple's apprehension.
Reports indicate that Abena Benewa gave birth at home with the help of a traditional birth attendant, who declared the baby deceased shortly after delivery. The couple claimed preparations were underway for a proper burial, with the father, Bright Ashiao, insisting on handling the process himself.
However, suspicions arose when the body appeared freshly mutilated rather than naturally deceased or buried, prompting residents to question the pair rigorously before handing them over to authorities.
The suspects are now in custody at the Awutu Bereku District Police Command, under the leadership of Superintendent Edmond Nyamekye, where they are assisting with ongoing investigations.
While local residents and some reports have linked the act to suspected money rituals, a motive tied to desperate beliefs in quick wealth, police have not yet officially confirmed this as the reason. The case has reignited discussions about superstition, hardship, and child protection in parts of Ghana, as authorities work to establish the full facts.
