Ghana Sends 48 Engineers Regiment to Aid Jamaica’s Post-Hurricane Reconstruction

Ghana has announced the deployment of personnel from the 48 Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces to Jamaica to bolster recovery efforts after the recent hurricane. The move forms part of Ghana’s commitment to supporting countries affected by natural disasters, especially within the Global South.

The engineers, who are highly trained in infrastructure development and disaster response, will assist Jamaican authorities in rebuilding communities devastated by the storm. Their tasks will include repairing homes, clearing debris, and restoring basic infrastructure that was severely damaged.

This support follows earlier humanitarian assistance from the Government of Ghana, which donated relief items worth GH¢10 million to Jamaica, Cuba, and Sudan. The supplies included essential items such as food, medical products, mattresses, and water-storage equipment to help affected communities stabilize.

President John Dramani Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s gesture is rooted in solidarity and the shared history between African and Caribbean nations. He described the deployment as a practical demonstration of cooperation in times of crisis, reinforcing longstanding diplomatic ties.

The 48 Engineers Regiment has recently undergone readiness assessments and advanced equipment training, ensuring that the team heading to Jamaica is fully prepared for field operations. Their deployment is expected to provide significant technical support as Jamaica works to rebuild lives and critical infrastructure in the months ahead.
