ACCRA, Ghana — President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a fleet of Toyota Land Cruisers to former high-ranking military officers, resolving a protocol dispute following the government's recall of armoured vehicles previously issued under their retirement packages.

The official handover took place on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) General Headquarters in Burma Camp, Accra. Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, presented the vehicles on behalf of the President.

Key beneficiaries of the executive compensation package include the immediate past Chief of the Defence Staff, General Thomas Oppong-Peprah (rtd), alongside former GAF service commanders.

Executive Commitment Fulfilled

The vehicle delivery follows the state's decision to reclaim heavy armoured transport previously allocated to retiring commanders as ex gratia. In response to concerns raised over post-service mobility, President Mahama pledged to provide non-armoured utility vehicles suitable for civilian post-service use.

Presenting the keys, Lt. Gen. Agyapong stated that the gesture underscores the government’s commitment to preserving executive protocols while honoring the veteran leaders' contributions to national security.

During the ceremony, the CDS briefed the retired brass on active defense initiatives, including ongoing infrastructure projects, soldier welfare interventions, and strategic modernization programs across the three service branches.

Veterans Applaud Military Reforms

Expressing appreciation on behalf of the beneficiaries, former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe (rtd), commended President Mahama for honoring his executive pledge.

"This presentation is a meaningful demonstration of the government's appreciation for the sacrifices of retired military personnel," Air Marshal Bekoe noted.

He further praised Lt. Gen. Agyapong’s high command for advancing institutional reforms aimed at boosting troop morale and enhancing overall operational readiness.
