Court Orders Arrest of Chairman Wontumi for Failing to Appear

The High Court in Accra has issued a warrant for the arrest of Bernard Antwi Boasiako. He is the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, known as Chairman Wontumi. He did not appear in court and did not ask for permission.

The case, which was called at 9:40 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, went ahead without Wontumi or any of his lawyers present. No explanation was offered to the court for their absence.

Chief State Attorney Stella Ohene Appiah led the prosecution team. The judge, Justice Audrey Kocuvi-Tay, was disappointed with the accused's behavior. She noted that he and his legal team had not given “any excuse of any sort to the court.”

Tuesday’s hearing was scheduled for the filing of disclosures and case management.

Chairman Wontumi is facing trial together with Kwame Antwi, a director of Akonta Mining Limited, and the company itself. They are accused of assigning mineral rights without lawful approval.
