Teacher Sentenced to 12 Years Imprisonment for Defiling 12-Year-Old Pupil

The Odumase-Krobo Circuit Court has handed down a 12-year prison sentence to Hondana Mensah, a 32-year-old teacher, after finding him guilty of defiling his 12-year-old pupil.

The conviction was ruled by presiding judge Kwasi Appiatse Abaidoo, who emphasized that the sentence should serve as a strong deterrent against sexual offenses targeting children and vulnerable individuals.

Mensah was prosecuted and found guilty under the following legal provisions:

  • Offense: Defilement of a child under 16.
  • Statute: Contrary to Section 101(2) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), as amended by Section 18 of Act 554.
  • Prosecutor: Chief Inspector Godsway Kromoah.

Details of the Case

The victim, a Class Six pupil, lives with her mother—a 43-year-old businesswoman—in the Combine suburb of Akosombo.

According to the prosecution, the victim's family had engaged Mensah to provide private French lessons for the child, a role he had held for approximately four years.

How the Abuse Was Discovered

  • July 11, 2026: The victim's mother noticed unusual changes in her daughter's manner of walking and questioned her.
  • The Revelation: The child revealed that on July 8, 2026, at around 5:00 PM, Mensah had sexual intercourse with her during a private lesson at the family residence.
  • Coercion & Threats: The prosecution noted that the accused warned the victim to remain silent, claiming exposure would bring her shame. He also threatened to fail her in his class exams if she spoke out.

Arrest and Medical Findings

Following the victim’s disclosure, the family reported the incident to the police.

  • Medical Evidence: A medical examination conducted at a government hospital revealed physical findings consistent with sexual assault.
  • The Arrest: Mensah was arrested on July 12, 2026.
  • Defense: In his cautioned statement to the police, Mensah denied the allegations. However, following a thorough investigation, the prosecution successfully established the offense in court, leading to his conviction.
