Politicians Must Keep Their Promises to Citizens – NAPO
Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) vice-presidential candidate Matthew Opoku Prempeh has stated that the long-term credibility of political leaders depends on their ability to deliver on commitments made to voters during election campaigns.
Addressing students and academics at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, the former Energy Minister argued that citizens judge governments based on visible improvements in their daily lives rather than campaign rhetoric. He maintained that leadership should be rooted in accountability and backed by institutions capable of translating policies into measurable outcomes.
Popularly known as NAPO, Dr. Opoku Prempeh noted that public confidence in governments grows when promises are fulfilled. He referenced the implementation of the Free Senior High School programme as an example of a policy that helped strengthen trust between the government and the electorate.
He further observed that Ghana's constitutional arrangement grants substantial powers to the presidency, placing a significant burden on elected leaders to ensure effective governance. However, he stressed that no president can succeed alone, emphasizing the need for competent ministers and efficient state institutions to support policy execution.
According to him, political power comes with the responsibility of managing national resources in a manner that benefits citizens. He cautioned that electoral victories can be short-lived if governments fail to meet public expectations, warning that unmet promises often lead to frustration and declining confidence in political leadership.
