Government Is Recruiting 7,000 Teachers and 3,000 Lecturers — Haruna Iddrisu
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has revealed that government is currently recruiting about 7,000 teachers and nearly 3,000 lecturers to help reduce Ghana’s growing education workforce deficit.
Speaking in Parliament on Friday, May 29, 2026, the Minister said the government is also working to secure additional financial clearance to recruit more teachers across the country. According to him, Ghana urgently requires at least 50,000 teachers nationwide to adequately meet the needs of schools, although that target depends heavily on the country’s budget capacity.
“Mr. Speaker, currently we are undertaking some recruitment of about 7,000 teachers across the country. And for the tertiary education level, close to 3,000 lecturers to be able to fill in the gap,” he stated.
He added that a nationwide assessment of staffing shortages showed a significant gap in the education sector. “If you do a national assessment of our needs, we need a minimum of 50,000 teachers across the country but that is subject to budget and the budget being able to absorb that,” he explained.
The Minister also highlighted the severity of the teacher shortage in some districts, citing the case of Prestea Huni-Valley, where 176 teachers are reportedly being paid directly by parents to support teaching activities in local classrooms.
Haruna Iddrisu further announced that the newly recruited teachers are expected to officially begin work on July 1, 2026, as government moves to strengthen staffing levels in schools nationwide.
