Two Nannies Arrested for Drugging and Abusing Twin Toddlers at East Legon

Police at the Airport Division have taken into custody two nannies accused of giving sleep-inducing drugs to their employer’s two-year-old twin sons at East Legon in Accra.

The suspects — Francisca Boakye, a 30-year-old student nurse from Konongo in the Ashanti Region, and Harriet Ansah, a 31-year-old from Jasikan in the Volta Region — have reportedly admitted to mistreating the toddlers in several ways during the eight months they worked in the household.

According to the Director of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the children’s mother, a 41-year-old businesswoman, filed a report after noticing her sons were unusually drowsy and behaving differently in September 2025.

“Investigations revealed that the caregivers had been administering a drug suspected to be Dynewell to the children without their mother’s approval, allegedly to keep them asleep for long hours so they could focus on other chores,” Supt. Obeng stated during a media briefing.

When police searched the suspects’ room, they found two used and four unused trays of a substance in sachet packs believed to have been involved in the alleged acts. Further findings indicated that the nannies had also burned the toddlers’ hands and insulted them with names such as “chimpanzee.”

The two suspects have since been formally charged and remanded by the court, pending their next appearance on October 20, 2025.

Supt. Obeng called on parents and guardians to be more cautious in monitoring domestic workers, condemning any acts of cruelty directed at children.
