Mahama Calls for Investigation Into Poor 2025 WASSCE Performance

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep concern about the sharp drop in the 2025 WASSCE results. He called the decline in student performance “mind-boggling.” At the launch of the STEMBox program for primary schools, he expressed concern. The poor results have worried the government, parents, and the public.

Mahama revealed that he has directed the Education Minister to conduct a thorough review of the examiners’ report to identify the root causes of the sudden slump. He noted that it is difficult to understand how students taught under the same conditions as previous years could perform so poorly.

His remarks follow WAEC’s disclosure that candidates performed badly in key subjects—especially Core Mathematics and Social Studies. Core Mathematics recorded the steepest fall, with A1–C6 passes dropping from 305,132 in 2024 to 209,068 in 2025. The overall pass rate fell to 48.73%, leaving more than half of candidates without the grades needed for tertiary admission.

Chief examiners stressed that the issue was not with the exam itself but with candidate weaknesses, citing challenges in data interpretation, mathematical representations, real-life problem solving, cumulative frequency tables, and understanding social studies concepts such as government policies, the economic impact of lavish funerals, and Ghana’s work with UN agencies.
