Konongo: Chief Storms Galamsey Site with Eggs and Schnapps to Invoke Curses on Galamsey Workers

A visibly angry chief in Konongo in the Ashanti Region has stormed an illegal mining (galamsey) site in his community to invoke traditional curses on those involved in activities he says are destroying the environment.

In a video circulating on social media, the chief is seen carrying a crate of eggs and bottles of schnapps, accompanied by his sub-chiefs and elders as they proceeded to the mining site to perform the traditional ritual.

Upon arriving, the chief confronted the site's foreman, questioning how the miners could continue destroying the land and nearby water bodies despite the severe environmental consequences.

He also criticised the workers, stating that although they had engaged in illegal mining for years, many had little to show for it compared with the well-built homes surrounding the area.

The chief further expressed concern that the mining activities were taking place close to residential buildings, warning that continued excavation could weaken the foundations of the houses and pose a serious threat to lives and property in the future.

He then proceeded with the traditional rite, invoking curses on anyone who continues to engage in illegal mining in the area, as residents looked on.

The incident highlights growing frustration among traditional leaders over the persistent destruction of Ghana's lands and water bodies by illegal mining operations.
