Gov’t to Expand Public and Private Transport Services - Vice President
Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has confirmed that the government is dedicated to improving Ghana’s transport services. This will help make travel easier for commuters across the country.
Her assurance comes amid growing public concern over an apparent shortage of commercial vehicles, a situation that has resulted in overcrowding and, in some cases, the exploitation of passengers. Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in the transport sector on Friday, January 16, the Vice President stressed government’s determination to deliver a smooth, efficient and reliable transport system.
According to her, government remains focused on ensuring affordability and safety for commuters while strengthening both the public and private transport sectors. She assured transport operators of sustained government support, particularly through the provision of new high-occupancy buses to augment existing services.
“His Excellency has asked me to assure all of you that he will support Metro Mass, Ayalolo and the private sector with new high-occupancy buses to improve services in the medium term,” she stated.
The Vice President also disclosed that plans are underway to fast-track the repair of broken-down buses to increase the number of vehicles on the roads as quickly as possible.
“We are working to ensure that buses requiring repairs are attended to promptly so they can return to service and ease pressure on commuters,” she added.
She further urged transport operators to treat passengers with dignity and respect, emphasising that improved service delivery must go hand in hand with professionalism and consideration for the motoring public.
Government says these measures form part of broader efforts to address transport challenges and improve mobility nationwide.
