Foreigners seeking Ghanaian passports illegally will be dealt with ruthlessly – Ablakwa.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has warned foreigners not to try to get Ghanaian passports illegally. He said that Ghana's laws will be strictly enforced against anyone who breaks this rule.
He disclosed that the government has significantly strengthened security measures at passport offices and border points, supported by investments in modern technology, to prevent non-Ghanaians from illegally acquiring Ghanaian passports. According to him, such actions undermine the integrity and global credibility Ghana has built over the years.
“Ghanaians are concerned about protecting the integrity of our passport. We have tightened security and invested in technology, and foreigners will have a very difficult time trying to acquire Ghanaian passports illegally,” the Minister said, adding that systems are in place to swiftly apprehend offenders.
Mr. Ablakwa made these remarks during the commissioning of a new Passport Application Centre in the Savannah Region on December 31. He noted that additional border security measures have been implemented, particularly to prevent foreigners from infiltrating Damongo to obtain passports.
Touching on the safety of Ghanaians abroad, the Foreign Affairs Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of citizens living outside the country.
Savannah Regional Minister, Salisu Bi-Awuribe, welcomed the new facility, describing it as a major relief for residents who previously had to travel long distances for passport services. He revealed that the Regional Coordinating Council has allocated two acres of land for the construction of a permanent passport office.
The commissioning ceremony concluded with seven applicants receiving their passports directly from the Minister and his delegation.
