Ghana and U.S. Strengthen Security Cooperation
Ghana and the United States have increased their security cooperation. This includes sharing more intelligence and working together on aviation activities, said Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced a big increase in security cooperation with the United States. He highlighted new efforts under the long-standing Defence Cooperation Agreement.
The Minister said that Ghana and the U.S. are sharing intelligence more. They are also doing more military training together. They are working together to use U.S. aviation assets.
This is part of their commitment to improve security in the region and the country. The development follows a constructive meeting with the Acting U.S. Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Rolf Olson, on Monday, December 1.
Mr. Ablakwa noted that both nations continue to build on “shared security priorities,” describing the collaboration as timely and mutually beneficial.
Beyond security matters, the minister also highlighted notable progress in broader Ghana–U.S. relations.
Recent gains include the restoration of five-year visas for Ghanaians, removal of the Trump-era 15% tariffs on cocoa, semi-processed cocoa, and other approved agricultural products, as well as arrangements to support Ghanaian fans ahead of the FIFA World Cup.
He further disclosed that Ghana has been exempted from the recent Trump Green Card Review and immigration suspension policy, a move widely praised as a diplomatic success.
Touching on trade, Mr. Ablakwa expressed optimism about ongoing negotiations under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), stating that Ghana is “hopeful of a positive outcome.”
He assured the public that aviation activities involving the U.S. military would continue to be carried out under the oversight of Ghanaian authorities, reaffirming that “Ghana’s strategic national interest remains our guiding principle.”
The renewed cooperation signals a strengthening of ties between Accra and Washington at a time when global and regional security challenges continue to evolve.
