Local Languages To Be Used in Teaching Mathematics in Ghana.

Local Languages To Be Used in Teaching Mathematics in Ghana.
Ghana's Minister for education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu

Ghana is taking new steps to improve learning at the basic level. They are promoting the use of local languages in teaching, including math. Education authorities have said that children learn better when taught in a language they know. This is especially true in their early years.

Under existing education policy, local languages are encouraged from Kindergarten through Primary Three, after which learners gradually transition to English. This approach is intended to build a strong foundation in numeracy and literacy while ensuring that English remains an important part of instruction.

In addition to government policy, partnerships with education-focused organisations and digital learning platforms are helping to expand mathematics teaching in languages such as Twi, Ga, Ewe and Hausa. These initiatives aim to reduce language barriers that often make mathematics difficult for young learners, while also improving confidence and classroom participation.

Although challenges remain, including the development of standardised teaching materials and teacher training, education experts believe the increased use of local languages will support better understanding, improved performance and more inclusive learning across Ghana’s basic schools.
