Ghana to Build 24-Hour Markets in All 261 Districts
The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, has announced plans to construct modern 24-hour markets across all 261 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs). The project forms part of the government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda aimed at driving job creation, boosting local commerce, and modernising urban infrastructure.

Each market will be equipped with improved sanitation systems, reliable water supply, proper drainage, and enhanced security and lighting to enable safe night-time operations. Local Government Minister Ahmed Ibrahim said the initiative seeks to transform traditional markets into clean, accessible, and efficient hubs that operate seamlessly day and night — creating decent jobs, particularly for women and the youth.

Construction is set to begin in December 2025 and conclude by December 2027 in districts that have secured land for the project. The government says the initiative will formalise informal trading, enhance local revenue mobilisation, and strengthen inclusive economic growth across the country.
