UGMC Rejects Claims by Michael Blackson Over Care Provided to Late Mother

The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has publicly defended the medical care given to the late mother of Ghanaian-American comedian Michael Blackson, rejecting claims that she received inadequate treatment before her death.
In an official statement released on August 5, the hospital said Blackson's recent social media comments about the facility's handling of his mother's case do not present an accurate account of what occurred during her admission.
The response follows a viral video shared by the comedian a day earlier, in which he accused the hospital of failing his 83-year-old mother. Blackson claimed she was repeatedly given incorrect diagnoses and suggested that financial demands appeared to take precedence over her healthcare. He also alleged that one of his sisters was assaulted during their interactions with hospital staff.
While extending condolences to the bereaved family, UGMC said it had carefully reviewed the issues raised and stood by the professionalism of its healthcare team.
According to the hospital, the patient arrived after being referred from another health facility and remained under its care from May 27 until her death on July 16, a period of nearly two months. However, UGMC said it would not disclose any information about her medical condition or treatment, explaining that patient confidentiality continues to apply even after death.
The hospital emphasised that doctors and other medical professionals make treatment decisions based solely on clinical judgement and established medical standards. It also dismissed suggestions that payment procedures influence healthcare decisions, stating that financial administration and clinical care are handled independently.
On the allegation that a member of staff physically assaulted a relative of the deceased, UGMC said the issue has already been handed over to law enforcement authorities. Because the matter is under investigation, the hospital said it would not make any further public comments.
UGMC added that it remains willing to engage with Blackson's family through the appropriate channels should they seek further clarification. It also assured the public that complaints involving staff conduct are investigated whenever sufficient evidence is presented and encouraged patients with concerns about its services to report them through its Client Services Unit.
The disagreement has attracted significant public attention online, with many Ghanaians debating patient care, communication between hospitals and families, and accountability within the country's healthcare system. However, UGMC insists that the allegations circulating on social media do not accurately reflect the care provided in this case.
