Trotro Mate Jailed 3 Months for Stealing GH¢7,000 and Phone at Tema Station
A 27-year-old driver’s mate, Edem Avenyo, has been sentenced to three months in prison. The Gbese District Court found him guilty. He stole GH¢7,000 and a Samsung Galaxy mobile phone. This happened at the Tema Station in Accra.
Avenyo pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and was convicted on his own plea. During proceedings, the court heard that after stealing the phone, he used it to take a photograph of himself and uploaded the image on the complainant’s WhatsApp status, an act that later helped investigators trace him.
Despite appealing to the court to temper justice with mercy and promising to repay the stolen money and replace the phone, the court sentenced him to a custodial term of three months.
Prosecuting, Inspector Isaac Agyemang told the court that the complainant is a public transport driver living at Aplaku, while Avenyo resides around the Arts Centre area. On October 24, 2025, the complainant parked his vehicle at the Tema Station car park behind the National Lotteries Authority and slept in it with his mate, Godwin Owusu.
At about 4:00 a.m. on October 25, 2025, the complainant woke up to discover that GH¢7,000 kept under the vehicle seat and his Samsung Galaxy phone, valued at GH¢2,900, were missing. Later that morning, Owusu called the phone, which Avenyo answered but refused to return.
On October 26, 2025, Avenyo took a photo of himself using the stolen phone and posted it on the complainant’s WhatsApp status. He was eventually arrested on December 19, 2025, at his hideout near the COCOBOD area. Investigations revealed that he had sold the phone at Nsawam for GH¢800 and spent the stolen cash.
