Driver’s Licences to Expire on Birthdays – DVLA

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced a new policy that will see driver’s licences in Ghana expire on the licence holder’s birthday.

According to the DVLA, the move is aimed at making it easier for motorists to remember their renewal dates and improve compliance with licensing regulations across the country.

Speaking at a press briefing, the Chief Executive Officer of the DVLA, Julius Neequaye Kotey, explained that aligning licence expiry dates with drivers’ birthdays will help reduce cases of expired licences and enhance efficiency in the renewal process.

He noted that the new system forms part of broader reforms to modernise the Authority’s operations and improve service delivery to the public.

Under the new arrangement, motorists will be required to renew their licences on or before their birthdays once their current licences expire.

In addition, the DVLA has announced plans to introduce SMS reminders to notify drivers ahead of their renewal dates, a move expected to further reduce default rates and improve road safety compliance.

The Authority urged all drivers to ensure their personal details, especially mobile phone numbers, are updated in the DVLA system to benefit fully from the new notification service.
