Burkina Faso has grounded a Nigerian military aircraft after authorities claimed it entered the country’s airspace without authorization. The aircraft, which carried 11 military personnel, was intercepted and forced to land in Bobo-Dioulasso.

According to state media in Burkina Faso, officials immediately opened inquiries to determine why the aircraft had entered their airspace without prior clearance.

The Confederation of Sahel States (AES) strongly condemned the incident, describing the unauthorized entry as a violation of international aviation and military protocols. The group revealed that the two crew members and nine passengers on board have been detained while investigations continue.

In response to the incident, AES placed its air and anti-aircraft defense systems on maximum alert and warned that any future breaches could result in intercepted aircraft being neutralized.

This development comes at a time of heightened regional tension, following Nigeria’s recent deployment of troops and jets to help counter a coup attempt in neighboring Benin.

Analysts say the timing may deepen friction between Nigeria and the AES bloc, which has been repositioning itself politically and militarily in the Sahel. As Burkina Faso’s investigation proceeds, observers are watching closely for Nigeria’s official response and the potential diplomatic fallout across West Africa.
