Attacks on Teachers Will Attract Severe Consequences – Education Ministry
The Ministry of Education has issued a strong warning that assaults on teachers will attract “severe consequences” under the laws of Ghana, following a series of violent incidents reported in schools across the country.
In a press statement dated February 19, the Ministry said it notes “with grave concern” cases of students attacking teachers and engaging in related acts of violence. The statement, signed by Deputy Minister Clement Apaak, stressed that authorities are determined to put an end to such behaviour.
“The Ministry takes strong exception to these developments and is resolved to nip this in the bud,” the statement said. It further emphasised that any individual, including students, who assaults a teacher in the lawful performance of their professional duties will face severe consequences in accordance with Ghanaian law.
As part of efforts to demonstrate that the warning is not merely symbolic, the Ministry cited a recent case in Kade where students were prosecuted for assaulting a tutor. According to the statement, the accused persons were arrested, arraigned before court, and pleaded guilty to charges including conspiracy and assault. They have since been convicted and fined.
The Ministry also condemned misconduct during the Super Zonal Sports Competition in the Eastern Region, which reportedly involved a stabbing and an alleged sexual assault. Authorities confirmed that suspects in that case have been arrested and remain in police custody assisting with investigations, while victims are receiving medical and psychosocial support.
In a separate incident at a WAEC school, two students and an accomplice have been arraigned over the alleged assault of a teacher. The accused persons have been remanded into police custody for six weeks pending further court proceedings.
At the 54th Delegates Conference of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), President John Dramani Mahama reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance stance on attacks against teachers. According to the Ministry, the President pledged that no attack on teachers will be tolerated under any circumstance and assured that perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The Ministry said it fully aligns with the President’s position and will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and the judiciary to ensure justice is served. It added that beyond condemning the violent acts, it is taking concrete steps through the court system to demand accountability and protect teachers across the country.
