Nine Muslims Arrested in Kano State for Eating on First Day of Ramadan
The Islamic police in Kano, Nigeria, arrested nine Muslims on Wednesday, February 18th, 2026, for eating publicly on the first day of Ramadan.
The detainees included seven men and two women. Kano State, which has a predominantly Muslim population, enforces Sharia law alongside secular law.
During Ramadan, the Hisbah police carry out regular inspections of cafes, markets, and public spaces to ensure residents observe fasting rules. Those found violating the rules are usually detained for education rather than punishment.
The nine detainees said they were unaware that Ramadan had started. The Hisbah announced plans to educate them on the significance of fasting, daily prayers, and the teachings of the Quran, emphasizing the spiritual importance of observing Ramadan.
