"Remove all unauthorized structures immediately" – AMA warns.
The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has torn down two large sheds. These sheds were used as an auto-mechanic workshop. They were located behind the Awudome Cemetery near the SSNIT Pension House. This action is part of a campaign against encroachment on public land.
The operation, carried out on Monday, followed repeated directives issued by the Assembly under the leadership of Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, ordering occupants to vacate government-reserved land.
During the exercise, AMA officials also confiscated a weighing scale from scrap dealers who had turned a parcel of land in front of a Catholic Church near the Awudome Roundabout into an illegal scrap collection point.
Renovation works on a nearby shop were additionally halted after those undertaking the works failed to produce the required permits when requested by the task force.
Speaking after the operation, the Coordinating Director of the AMA, Mr. Douglas N. K. Annoful, said the Assembly was acting to protect public lands and enforce city regulations after several warnings were ignored.
He warned that the AMA would sustain the enforcement drive and impose sanctions on individuals who continue to encroach on government land, obstruct roads, or put up unauthorised structures within the metropolis.
Mr. Annoful further reminded traders and roadside operators to stay off the streets from February 1, 2026, ahead of the Assembly’s planned decongestion exercise aimed at clearing unauthorised activities from major roads and public spaces in Accra.
