Accra High Court Stops Daddy Lumba's Funeral Arrangements
An Accra High Court has ruled in favor of the maternal side of the Fosuh family. They wanted to stop Kofi Owusu, the family head, from organizing the final funeral rites. This is for highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosuh, who is also known as Daddy Lumba.
Delivering its decision, the court held that each case must be determined on its merits, noting that affidavits before it showed the immediate family had been sidelined in the funeral planning process. The judge further stated that although the family head traditionally leads funeral arrangements, such authority must be exercised with the full involvement of the deceased’s immediate family.
The court also observed that any further delay in the burial could result in significant financial cost. However, it ruled that the concerns raised by the applicants were legitimate and required judicial intervention.
As a result, the judge made the following orders:
- The first respondent (family head) is restrained from organising the burial of Daddy Lumba until the final determination of the substantive matter.
- The third respondent (Transitions Funeral Home) is restrained from releasing the body to any party.
- The first respondent must convene a meeting within three weeks, bringing together all parties and stakeholders to jointly plan and fix a new date for the final funeral rites.
- Funds raised for the funeral must be separated from the personal account of the late musician.
- The applicants are to meet the registrar to sign an affidavit as directed by the court.
The ruling effectively places the funeral arrangements on hold while ensuring that all factions within the Fosuh family are included in the final decisions concerning the burial of the highlife icon.
The matter has been postponed to January 15, 2026.
