Police in northwestern Uganda have arrested two women in their 20s after neighbors reportedly accused them of engaging in same-sex conduct in public.

According to local authorities, the women were detained on February 18 after residents alleged they were seen kissing. Police say some neighbors took photographs as evidence and further claimed that several women had been visiting the residence of the suspects.

The arrests were made under Uganda’s 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act, a controversial law that prescribes severe penalties, including life imprisonment. In cases categorized as “aggravated homosexuality,” the law allows for the death penalty.

Police confirmed that a search of the women’s residence did not uncover any physical evidence. However, officials say investigations are ongoing.

The two women have reportedly remained in detention without legal representation since their arrest.

Human rights organizations have condemned the arrests, expressing concerns that the law has contributed to increased fear within the LGBTQ+ community. Advocacy groups argue that the legislation may be fueling cases of blackmail, extortion, and social stigma.

Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act has faced both domestic and international criticism since its passage in 2023, with opponents warning about its broader human rights implications.

Authorities have not yet announced a court date as investigations continue.
