GES Suspends Inter-School Sports Competitions in the Central Region
The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the immediate suspension of all zonal inter-school sporting activities among Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) in the region.
The decision follows violent incidents recorded during recent athletics competitions, including a clash involving students of Obrachire Senior High Technical School and Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).
What Happened in Agona Swedru?
According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday, February 19, during a district inter-schools athletics competition in Agona Swedru. Tensions between students of the two schools reportedly escalated, resulting in a physical confrontation.
Videos circulating online show moments of the clash, sparking widespread public concern over student safety at school sporting events.
In a statement dated Sunday, February 22, 2026, GES said it received credible reports of violence and disturbances during the competitions. The Directorate described the incidents as a threat to the safety and well-being of students, staff, and spectators.
“These unfortunate occurrences have not only disrupted the spirit of healthy competition but have also posed serious threats to the safety and well-being of students, staff, and spectators,” the statement noted.
GES emphasized that school sports are intended to promote discipline, teamwork, mutual respect, and healthy rivalry — values that must not be undermined by acts of indiscipline.
Immediate Suspension Until Further Notice
The Regional Directorate has directed all heads of SHSs and SHTSs to immediately suspend any planned or scheduled zonal inter-school athletics competitions. School authorities are also required to communicate the directive to staff, students, and relevant stakeholders to ensure strict compliance.
According to GES, the temporary suspension will allow Management to conduct a thorough review of the situation, engage stakeholders, and implement preventive measures to avoid a recurrence.
The Directorate assured the public of its commitment to restoring sporting activities under safe and orderly conditions that reflect the true spirit of competition.
