Suspect Arrested in Tragic Murder of UCC Student, Innocentia.
The University of Cape Coast community and the nation at large have been thrown into deep mourning following the tragic and untimely death of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, a promising young student whose life was cut short under heartbreaking circumstances.
In a significant breakthrough that brings a glimmer of hope for justice, the Ghana Police Service has officially arrested the prime suspect connected to her murder.
On the evening of Monday, June 15, 2026, at approximately 7:15 PM, the IGP’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team closed in on the suspect. Following days of sustained, intelligence-led operations, thirty-nine-year-old Michael Mensah was apprehended at the Pedu Lorry Station in Cape Coast.
The arrest brings a temporary sigh of relief to a terrified student body, as authorities work around the clock to piece together the final moments of Innocentia’s life. Preliminary police investigations have begun to paint a chilling picture of the events leading up to the tragedy.
On Thursday, June 11, 2026, at around 6:48 PM, the suspect, Michael Mensah—who claims to be a teacher by profession but also operates as a driver—picked up Innocentia from the Ayensu Plaza, located within the busy UCC hostel enclave.
Mensah allegedly drove Innocentia to Hutchland Beach in Cape Coast, and according to investigators, this beach was the last place the young student was ever seen alive. The news has sent shockwaves through the UCC campus, where hostel areas, usually vibrant with student life, have been filled with a somber silence as friends and classmates grieve the loss of a bright young soul.
While the arrest of Michael Mensah is a crucial first step, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public that investigations are still actively ongoing to uncover the exact motive behind this horrific crime and ensure that the full rigor of the law is applied. Authorities have promised to communicate further developments as they unfold.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a grim reminder for students, especially those living in off-campus hostel enclaves, to remain hyper-vigilant by sharing their live locations with loved ones, verifying driver identities, and trusting their instincts in unsafe situations.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and classmates of Innocentia Atsufui Avinu as we stand with the UCC community in demanding swift and uncompromising justice.
