"We want the foreigners to come back now!" — Factory Workers in SA
"We want the foreigners to come back now!", factory workers in South Africa have taken to the streets to protest the dismissal of foreign workers, warning that the move could disrupt production and threaten jobs.
The protesters argue that many industries depend heavily on skilled foreign labour and that there are not enough local workers with the expertise needed to replace them.
According to them, many of the foreigners who have been chased away or assaulted are experienced machinists whose skills are crucial to the clothing industry.
"We say no to xenophobia. We need foreigners in South Africa," some protesters chanted.
One protester also claimed that many locals are losing their jobs because the foreign nationals being targeted are often business owners and employers.
He said that as these employers are forced out, many South Africans who worked for them are left unemployed.
