Trump Orders Deadly U.S. Airstrikes Against ISIS Targets in Nigeria
President Donald Trump has confirmed that American forces carried out a series of airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in Nigeria on Christmas Day, describing the operation as “powerful and deadly.”
According to U.S. officials, the strikes targeted ISIS-linked militants operating in northwestern Nigeria and were launched in response to recent attacks that Washington claims involved the killing of Christians. Trump warned that further military action could follow if extremist violence continues.
The operation was reportedly conducted with the knowledge and cooperation of Nigerian authorities, with U.S. forces relying on shared intelligence to carry out the strikes.
While the Nigerian government acknowledged collaboration, it stressed that terrorist groups in the country attack both Christians and Muslims, cautioning against oversimplifying the complex security challenges Nigeria faces.
The strikes highlight renewed U.S. involvement in counterterrorism efforts in West Africa and raise questions about their impact on regional security and U.S.–Nigeria relations.
