Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam shot dead in Libya

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the most prominent son of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been killed, according to sources close to the family, his lawyer Khaled el-Zaydi, and Libyan media.

Libya’s Office of the Attorney General said on Wednesday that investigators and forensic doctors examined Saif al-Islam’s body on Tuesday and determined that he died from gunshot wounds. The statement added that authorities are working to identify suspects and take the necessary steps to initiate a criminal case.

Although Saif al-Islam remains a well-known figure in Libya—particularly for his role in shaping policy before 2011—his public profile has diminished in recent years.

In 2015, a Libyan court sentenced him to death in absentia for suppressing peaceful protests during the 2011 uprising that ended his father’s rule. He was also provisionally charged by the International Criminal Court with alleged crimes against humanity, a case his lawyers were unable to dismiss.

In 2021, Saif al-Islam registered as a presidential candidate for elections scheduled for December, which ultimately collapsed due to prolonged political deadlock.
