President Mahama Grants Amnesty to 998 Prisoners, Prioritizing Mercy and Second Chances

In a move that reflects compassion and a commitment to giving people a second chance, President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners across Ghana. The decision, made on the recommendation of the Prisons Service Council and in consultation with the Council of State, falls in line with Article 72(1) of the Constitution.

The beneficiaries include 787 first-time offenders, who will now have the opportunity to reintegrate into society and rebuild their lives. Others affected are individuals whose death sentences have been commuted to life imprisonment, as well as those serving life sentences reduced to 20 years definite terms.

The President’s decision also considered the human side of justice by granting amnesty to 33 seriously ill prisoners, 36 elderly inmates above the age of 70, and even two nursing mothers who will now be reunited with their children.

By extending this clemency, President Mahama highlights the balance between justice and mercy, recognizing that rehabilitation and humanity must guide the justice system. This gesture not only eases the burden on the nation’s overcrowded prisons but also serves as a reminder that society can offer forgiveness and hope to those who are willing to start anew.
