Nigerian Jailed for Attempting to Obtain Ghanaian Passport with Fake Documents
A Nigerian woman has been jailed for six months with hard labour after she was caught trying to secure a Ghanaian passport with fake documents, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has confirmed.
The convict, 41-year-old Franca Wilson, appeared before the Adabraka District Court in Accra on May 12, 2026, where she pleaded guilty to three charges. The court ordered that all the sentences run concurrently.
According to the GIS, Wilson was arrested on April 24 during routine checks at the Accra Passport Application Centre. Officers became suspicious after noticing irregularities in the information she provided about her nationality.
She was later handed over to the National Enforcement Department of the GIS for detailed investigations.
Authorities discovered that Wilson is originally from Rivers State in Nigeria and was born to Nigerian parents. However, she allegedly submitted forged documents claiming she was born in Somanya in the Eastern Region of Ghana to a Ghanaian mother.
Investigators said she was unable to properly answer questions about her supposed Ghanaian background, raising further suspicion.
The GIS further revealed that Wilson acquired a fake birth certificate and a Ghana Card through the help of an unidentified agent. The agent reportedly handled her online passport application process and appointment booking.
During investigations, Wilson admitted to the offences in her caution statement.
The Immigration Service has since cautioned foreigners against engaging the services of fraudsters and middlemen who promise to help them obtain Ghanaian identity documents illegally.
The Service stressed that anyone caught attempting to fraudulently acquire Ghanaian travel or identity documents will face severe legal consequences under Ghanaian law.
