Ghanaians ‘Sleep With One Eye Open’ Due to Insecurity Under Mahama – Minority
Madam Patricia Appiagyei

The Minority in Parliament has raised serious concerns about Ghana’s security situation, warning that the country has become increasingly unsafe just one year into President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed mandate.

According to the group, rising crime levels have forced many citizens to live in constant fear, with people now “sleeping with one eye open.” The concerns were outlined at a press conference held in Accra on January 8.

Citing figures acknowledged by the Minister for the Interior, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei revealed that as of July 2025, Ghana had recorded approximately 628 armed robbery cases and 340 murder incidents involving illicit firearms within six months.

The Minority blamed the situation on politicised policing, weakened security institutions, and poor prioritisation of national safety, arguing that the state’s core responsibility to protect lives and property has been undermined.

The group also warned of a disturbing rise in kidnapping cases across the country, describing the trend as a national emergency rather than isolated criminal activity. According to the Minority, young men and women are disappearing, while children are reportedly being abducted on their way to school.

They further expressed concern about porous borders, alleging that illegal firearms are flowing freely into the country and empowering organised criminal networks. Criticising the government’s response as largely symbolic, the Minority argued that committees and meetings have failed to address the deepening crisis on the ground.

They stressed that Ghana urgently needs a comprehensive national security strategy, decisive leadership, and visible results to restore public confidence. Without swift action, the group warned, insecurity could further damage daily life, investor confidence, and national stability, turning the problem from a security failure into a broader governance crisis.
