President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to build a large 10,000-bed student hostel at the University of Ghana. This is part of efforts to improve the country’s higher education facilities.

Speaking on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at the opening of the 77th Annual New Year School and Conference, President Mahama described the project as a critical intervention aimed at addressing the chronic accommodation challenges and safety risks confronting students.

The President revealed that the project is the result of a bilateral agreement signed during a recent official visit to Singapore. According to him, the hostel will be built using prefabricated construction technology, where major components are manufactured in a factory and assembled on-site.

“This is going to be a prefabricated building. It means the building will be manufactured somewhere and then assembled on campus,” President Mahama explained. He further disclosed that preparations are already at an advanced stage, with machinery for the manufacturing factory currently being shipped from Singapore to Accra.

President Mahama linked the initiative to the growing vulnerability of students who are compelled to live off campus due to limited accommodation. He referenced a recent social media post by Professor Kweku Azar, which highlighted the contrast between the ease of securing campus housing in previous decades and the difficult realities students face today.

He stressed that the accommodation deficit has become a serious safety concern, citing incidents where students commuting from distant private residences have fallen victim to road accidents and armed robberies.

“It is preferable that we have as many of our students living on campus, or as close to campus as possible,” the President stated, adding that the University’s Vice-Chancellor had already been informed of the development.

The hostel project aligns with President Mahama’s “Reset Agenda” and his broader vision for 2026, which he earlier described as a year of “acceleration and expansion.”

In his 2026 New Year message, he pledged to continue digitalising schools and ensuring world-class education for every child. This major infrastructure investment represents a tangible commitment to strengthening tertiary education in Ghana.
