Maduro and Wife Plead Not Guilty to Drug and Weapons Charges in NY Court

Ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, pleaded not guilty to drug trafficking and weapons charges. They made this plea during a court appearance in New York on Monday, January 5, 2025. The court formally entered not-guilty pleas for both defendants as proceedings commenced.

Addressing the court, Maduro rejected the allegations and claimed he had been abducted in Caracas and forcibly removed from Venezuela. He described the case as politically motivated and insisted that he bears no responsibility for the offences outlined by prosecutors.

U.S. prosecutors allege that the former Venezuelan leader and his wife were involved in a criminal network connected to narcotics trafficking and illegal arms dealings. While details of the charges were presented during the hearing, no evidence was made public at this stage.
