Italian Man Caught Impersonating Deceased Mother to Collect Her Pension
A shocking case from northern Italy has caught the public's attention. Police arrested a 56-year-old man. He allegedly dressed as his deceased mother to keep collecting her pension. The scheme reportedly began after the woman’s death in 2022 and continued for almost three years.
According to local reports, the man repeatedly visited public offices wearing a wig, makeup, women’s clothes and jewellery in an attempt to renew his mother’s identification documents.
Authorities say the deception collapsed when an office employee noticed inconsistency in his appearance — including a thicker neck, unusual skin texture and a noticeably deep voice that occasionally slipped through the disguise. Suspicious staff alerted the police, who launched an investigation that led them to the man’s home.
During a search, officers discovered the mummified remains of his mother hidden inside the residence, which intensified the gravity of the case.
The man is now under investigation for fraud, identity theft, abuse of a corpse and several related offences. Italian media reports that he may have collected tens of thousands of euros in pension payments during the period of impersonation.
The case has sparked national debate about pension verification systems and raised questions on how such a scheme could go undetected for so long. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as legal proceedings continue.
